Heritage Open Day 2014

Heritage Open Days

St Peter's RC Church

A beautiful Gothic church designed by A W Pugin at the height of his powers in 1844. Directly attached to it is a fine modern church "in the round" sympathetically added in 1969. The casket containing the purported relic of St James' Hand will be shown in the Chancel. The stained glass windows in the old church and the wall mosaic in the splendid modern addition are particular highlights.

In the nearby Pugin Rooms Michael Eagleton will host a photographic display on the rich heritage of the church and the Marlow Remembers WW1 Association invite you to research your family connections to the war on computer and find out about the work they are doing. Did you know that Pugin designed the hands for Big Ben's clock faces?

Open from 11am to 4pm.

The Marlow Masonic Centre

This is a fascinating Gothic style building opened in 1861 as a public meeting hall. The Masonic Lodge moved into the hall in 1934 and maintain it to a high standard. The building has many interesting features including a beautiful and atmospheric central chamber with ceremonial regalia and furnishings.

Refreshments will be on offer (toilets too) and there will be a small exhibition about Freemasonry and its origins.

Open 10am to 2pm

The Deanery Garden

A large mature garden adjoining the church with plenty of interest to garden lovers. The house has been built around the oldest medieval building in Marlow and the stone wall and mullioned window of the Minstrel's Gallery is on view from the driveway. There will be a small exhibition in The Summerhouse on the history of this intriguing building.

Open 10am to 4pm

Self-guided tours of ancient St Peter Street will be available from the Marlow Society desk at the entrance.
