A free Zoom lecture by Julian Hunt
Tuesday 15th February, 7.30pm
A turnpike road, gated every few miles with spiked gates, was kept in repair by a trust made up of local gentry and tradesmen. They employed toll-keepers to demand payment from passing traffic.
Julian, a free-lance local history researcher, will explain how Buckinghamshire roads were maintained in this way during the 18th and 19th centuries, and how the turnpike trusts created the present-day road network.
