Heritage Open Day
Heritage Open Day this year was
Saturday 9th September 2023
at the
Royal British Legion Club
in Station Approach
Celebrating 150 years of the Marlow Donkey railway branch line
This year's Heritage Open Day was held on the hottest day of the summer at the Royal British Legion. A total of 170 visitors braved the heat to enjoy the Society's celebration of the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Marlow Donkey branch line to Bourne End.
In addition to a second showing of the popular vintage cine films of steam engines and the now closed track to Wycombe, visitors were treated to a display of Michael Eagleton's rare photos of our much missed station which was demolished in 1968.
Outside, on the Legion's newly refurbished covered patio area, the Marlow Ukulele Band gave two performances and raised a good sum for Rosie's Rainbow children's charity. Entertainment for young visitors included a Brio train set, making and colouring drawings of the tank engines that used to serve the line in the days of steam, and playing in a large cardboard model numbered 1421, of course!
The Legion benefitted greatly from the sale of refreshments at their bar and the society raised £181 in total from the sale of publications and contributions from participants on our well attended Victorian Walk. My thanks go to all the loyal band of volunteers who helped to make the day such a great success.
