Local History Group

We are often asked two questions: Who are the Local History Group? and What do you do?

The first of these questions is easy to answer: we are members of The Marlow Society who are interested in the history of Marlow, its surroundings, its buildings, its people and events which have taken place locally in both the recent and the distant past. We include people who were born in the Marlow district and those who moved here later in life.

The second question is rather akin to How long is a piece of string? because what we do covers so many different aspects and subjects. Some of the activities and topics we have researched over the years or are currently working on are:

Some of this research involves visits to special resource centres such as the County Records Office. Some is as simple as walking around and recording what is seen. Some is done in groups, usually led by one of the members with research skills, but some is done by a single individual with a specific interest. We aim to publish the results of our researches in the MS Newsletter, the Marlow Historian, as a leaflet or even a book!

Apart from all this, we arrange both formal lectures, usually twice a year, on topics of local historical interest (mills, railways, local villages etc.) for the Marlow Society and more frequent informal talks for any MS member who is interested. We make visits to local places of interest (brickworks, churches, museums etc), and usually include a pub lunch in the trip! These visits are also open to any MS member.

If you think you would like to join in any or all of our activities, whatever your skills (or lack of them) please contact the Chairman:

Peter Bailey email: tmslocalhistorygroup@marlowsociety.org.uk

We look forward to welcoming you.
